Who is at the Gate? (Ezekiel 44-45)

And the Lord said to me, “This gate shall remain shut; it shall not be opened, and no one shall enter by it, for the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered by it. Therefore it shall remain shut.  Ezekiel 44:3

The year was 1995. I will never forget that year for two reasons. The first reason was the birth of my oldest son. The second reason was because I was able to take a study tour of Israel. Yes, I walked in the Holy Land in 1995. There are many moments that are edged in my memory. I remember receiving the Lord’s Supper at the Garden Tomb and I remember the worship service on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee.

I also remember the day our tour group gathered in front of the eastern gate (called the Golden Gate) in the city of Jerusalem. I have the picture hanging in my office to this day. I can remember our tour guide telling the story of how when the Muslims took charge of Jerusalem, under the leadership of Sulciman, that they closed up the gate and it remains closed until this very day.

Because of our studies in Ezekiel we know that Jesus glory came through the gate and we know that God said (44:1) close up the gate. We also know that someday Jesus will come through this very gate (37:24). Please drink deeply in God’s Word today:

This very day, King Jesus sits as our God at the right hand of God the Father (Acts 5:31). This could be the very day when Jesus will come to enter by the gate and sit on the throne in Israel and the world (Matt. 25:31). When this happens, all the world will come to be judged by Him (Matt. 25:32-33). Jesus told his disciples to be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect (Matt. 24:44).

Oh what good news this is. But there is more good news. Before Jesus coming, He is calling to all people to follow Him. John pictures Jesus as standing before every person’s heart and knocking at their gates (door) (Rev. 3:20). Jesus did this in my life in February 1974. Praise be to His name, that He led me to open up the gate of my heart.

Dear reader, have you opened up the door of your heart? If not, do it today. If you have, consider this truth, some day He is coming to meet you in person. Oh what a day that will be.

Two questions:

  1. How did you respond when God came to the gate of your heart?
  2. How did todays study bring hope into your life?

Enjoy the lyrics to the worship song I sang this morning:

He’s coming on the cloudsHe’s coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down
And every chain will break
As broken hearts declare His praise
For who can stop the Lord AlmightyAnd our God is the lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the lamb
The lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the lion and the lamb
Every knee will bow before Him (yeah)So, open up the gatesSo, open up the gates
Make way before the King of Kings
The God who comes to save
Is here to set the captives free
For who can stop the Lord AlmightyOur God is the lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the lamb
The lamb that was slain
For the sin of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the lion and the lamb
Every knee will bow before Him”How many here believe
Every knee will bow
Every tongue will confess
And then”For who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord Almighty
No one
Who can stop
Sing it over the battle”Yeah, that’s it”Who can stop the Lord Almighty
There is no one
Who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord (yeah)And our God is the lion
The Lion of Judah
He’s roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the lamb
The lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the lion and the lamb
Every knee will bow before Him (yeah)Every knee will bow
Tongue confess
