Behind the Scenes (Acts 18-19)

32 Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. Acts 19:32

Could it be possible that behind the scenes there are forces at work which have a different purpose than most people realize? Now I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist but really I am not. Actually I am a Biblical theorist. The scripture teaches that there are behind the scenes activities in this world:

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places, Eph. 6:12

There is a clear battle between God and Satan. Those who follow God are in the number of the godly and those who follow Satan are in the number of the godless. Jesus is the power behind the godly and Satan is the power behind the godless.

We see this at work in the ancient city of Ephesus where Paul ministered in the power of God. God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 19:11. God was redeeming people in great numbers in the ministry of Paul, 19:26.

We read of others who wanted Paul’s success, but they had no behind the scenes power as did Paul, 19:13-16.

Behind the scenes there were those who hated Paul’s ministry because they were gaining financially from godless activity. The godless people loved their gods, 19:26-27.

So, we ask, what happened? The godless stirred up the crowds who willingly participated in the riot without even knowing why they did. Brothers and sisters, please be challenged to look deeper than the surface of what is happening in twenty-first century America. Behind the scenes the godless are pawns in the hands of Satan. He is lord of all lost people. Satan’s goal is simple, he wants to rule the world.

But you and I do not have to be afraid. We take great heart from Paul’s work in Ephesus. We can:

  1. Live without fear knowing God is for us, Acts 18:9-10.
  2. Live under his power and authority, Phil. 3:20-21.
  3. Minister with the attitude of one who has the purpose of reaching all people in our generation, Matt. 24:14.

You and I are on the winning team, so let’s win people!!!
