The Power of Surrender (Acts 4-5)

24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, Acts 4:24

Sixteen days ago JFBC committed to 21 days of fasting and prayer. Our goal was simply to align ourselves with the purposes of our Sovereign Lord. These days have been for me, the most impactful days of fasting and praying in my life.

Brothers and sisters, when Christians in unity come together to surrender to God’s purposes, a new way of life becomes evident and the people of God begin to live in this new way of life.

Adrian Rogers explained this better than I can when he said, “this new life is not a life where you surrender your will to God. It is a life where God’s will is your will.”

In Acts 4 we see an example of this. We read the story of how the Apostles were challenged by the leaders of Israel for simply preaching the Word in the Temple (Acts 3). The leaders arrest Peter and John and place them in the High Priests jail (strange to even write that last sentence).

On the next day these men were called to to give the reasons for their actions in Acts 3. Notice what happens when people are surrendered to God:

  • Peter boldly proclaims the gospel being filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • Peter boldly reveals his connection with Jesus. The people realize these men had spent their lives with Jesus.
  • Peter’s loyalty to Jesus is seen in proclaiming, we must obey Jesus.

The Jewish leaders had no other option but to let these men go. Luke records what happened next: Check out Acts 4:23-31.

The prayer meeting began with praise to the Sovereign Lord!!! These brothers and sisters knew who was in charge of all they were facing. In this prayer we see the power of surrender:

  1. The church surrendered to God’s way of carrying out His mission in the world.
  2. The church saw God’s hand in every second of every day. God was in charge of nations and its leaders.
  3. The church only sought for the power to carry out God’s plan.

This is why we read of a powerful church being formed. God always lends His resources to those who are surrendered to His will.

Today, join with all of God’s people and cry out, Oh Sovereign Lord, I surrender!!!

Brothers and sisters, power is coming!!! Victory is ours when we live a life where our will is His will!!!
