A Light In the Darkness (John 1-2)

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5

This has personally been an amazing week of study as I have had the honor of walking with you through each beginning chapters of the four gospels.  As I sit here today I realize the Lord has directed me each day to write about how Jesus first coming has the potential to impact our lives in the now:

  • In Luke 1 we discovered Christ to be our Messiah in impossible times.
  • In Luke 2 we discovered Jesus coming to rescue us from the worst of times.
  • In Matthew 1-2 we discovered Jesus to be our resting place in vicious times.
  • In Mark 1 we discovered the power of Jesus to give us a new beginning in life.

Today we come to John’s gospel.  John’s gospel focuses on the deity of Christ.  In this gospel we will discover many of the divine attributes of God.  In chapter 1 we discover the following about Jesus:

  • Jesus is the Word of God.
    • He is eternal
    • He is co-equal with God
    • He is the creator of all things
  • Jesus is the life.
    • He gives us our existence
    • He along gives us eternal life
  • Jesus is the light.

It is here where I want you to focus with me.  Certainly we need light in this dark world.  In Christ we discover the answer to how we got into this world (He is the creator).  In Christ we come to understand who is God (1:14-18).  In Christ we find purpose in this life (He is the light of our path).  In Christ we overcome the darkness of this world.  In Christ we become Children of God (1:12).

Oh, there is more:

  • Jesus is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

It is Christ who breaks the curse of sin by His payment on the cross. It is Christ who breaks the power of sin.  You and I can live a new life in Christ.  The misery of sin’s shame is no more because we are forgiven.

  • Jesus is the Son of God and the King of Israel.
  • Jesus is the Messiah.

Brothers and sisters, you and I have only experienced just a glimpse of who He is.  No wonder the darkness cannot overcome Him.  He is the true light and He offers light to the entire world.

Question, as a Christian do you feel like you are in a season of darkness?  Here are four questions:

  1. How is your fellowship with God?  Unconfessed sin leads to broken fellowship.  I John 1:9
  2. How is your faith?  Is God calling you to deeper faith? Luke 1:38
  3. What are you fighting through?  You and I have an enemy, Eph. 6:10-13.  Set your eyes firmly on the Light of the World.
  4. What are you failing to see?  I believe He is taking you to new heights of victory, James 1;2-5.

The words of the Song do it again really sum up what we have been reading this week:

Do It Again

Walking around these walls
I thought by now they’d fall
But You have never failed me yet
Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle’s won
For You have never failed me yet
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You’ve never failed me yet
I know the night won’t last
Your Word will come to pass
My heart will sing Your praise again
Jesus, You’re still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet
I’ve seen You move, come move the mountains
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
I’ve seen You move, come move the mountains
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
I’ve seen You move, come move the mountains
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
I’ll see You do it again
Oh-oh
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet
And You never failed me yet
I never will forget
You never failed me yet
And I never will forget
