The Day is Coming (Malachi 4)

For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch, Malachi 4:1.

Brothers and sisters, I never really intend to do it, but I sometimes allow it to happen.  Yes, I sometimes get tunnel vision.  Have you ever gotten tunnel vision? Here is working definition of tunnel vision:

“the tendency to focus exclusively on a single or limited goal or point of view”

The tunnel vision I confessed to above is those moments when I get me focused.  In those moments the Lord comes according to Hebrews 12:5-11 to chasten me in order that my vision would change.

Now there are other times when I get tunnel vision in the correct way.  Yes, there is a way to have correct tunnel vision.  According to Malachi this vision is  tunnel vision concerning the Day of the Lord.

The Prophet of God was attempting to turn his nation back to God.  We could say, they had a self-focused tunnel vision.  The Prophet points Israel to the one day in which they should be preparing for.  This day has two implications:

  • This will be a day of judgment for the unrighteous.  There will be the fires of judgment that will also include all the unrighteous from every age, Matt. 3:12.
  • This will be a day of joy for the righteous.  The righteous will leap for joy at the sight of the Second Coming of the Lord, Mal. 4:3-4.

Question: Do you have tunnel vision?

  1. If your Tunnel Vision is focused on you-you will ignore the truth of the Day of the Lord.
  2. If your Tunnel Vision is focused on unrighteous-you will resist the Day of the Lord.
  3. If your Tunnel Vision is focused on righteousness-you will live in light of the Day of the Lord.

In Heaven there will only be righteous people.  But we are not in Heaven yet.  We are called to live righteously here (Phil. 2:1-5) and we are called to reach the unrighteous.  Here are words of Tunnel Vision for God’s people:

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. I Peter 4:7-11
