A Lifestyle of Repentance (Zechariah 1-2, 12)

But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, ‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to deal with us for our ways and deeds, so has he dealt with us.’” Zechariah 1:6

In our last blog (Ezra 5-6) we focused our attention on the decrees of God.  We remember the open door of the Lord for His people to go home from exile. Ezra told the story of their return and then their completing of the House of the Lord.

Here is a question, what led them to return and obey the Lord?  The answer is seen in our focal text.  The Prophet Zechariah writes, “the people repented.”

The generations (1:1-5) before would not repent, this was why exile came.  But the new generation of people repented.  In chapter three the prophet calls for the new generation to live a lifestyle of repentance.

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here.

What is a lifestyle of repentance?  This is a lifestyle that has changed directions and continues to walk in the changed direction.

In America we have had times of crying out to God for help.  We remember the times we have cried out before storms, in storms, and after storms.  We have cried out for help in wars and in times of economic trials.  But we have never really cried out in repentance.

True repentance happens when:

  • There is a brokeness over one’s sin against God, Isaiah 1:18.
  • There is turning from sin that brings salvation, Gal. 2:20.
  • There is a new lifestyle formed that is in the opposite of the old way of life, II Cor. 5:17.

In our nation we have never seen such a movement among the people.  Will you join me in praying for such a movement in our day.  Will you join me in personally modeling a lifestyle of repentance.

    Pastor Keith,

Wow! What powerful and perfect words below! We all can see the act of crying out, but the act of repentant lifestyle is still veiled.

Keep reaching and preaching (Gal 6:9)!

    Love you my brother!

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)
