The Question of the Ages (Exodus 3)

14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”[a] And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”  Exodus 3:14

Every generation has its own set of questions that come as a result of constantly shifting society’s.  For example, in the 1960’s, America’s youth had to decide whether war is ever justified or not.  In America today, this generation is faced with questions of marriage and sexual orientation.

Despite all these unique questions there is a question that every generation faces. It is the question of the ages.  What is the question?  I believe the question is: is there a God and if there is a God, who is this God?

This same question was in play in Moses day.  You remember Moses? He was the little child that God had set aside to be His spokesman to the nation of Israel.

But at this point (Beginning of Exodus 3), Moses does not seem like the chosen one here in the desert, but he was.  Hebrews 11:24 says Moses chose to bear the reproach of his people.

It is 40 years later now.  Moses is waiting for a revelation from the true God. The God of his father and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.   Here Moses received the revelation of the One True God:

  • God reveals Himself as the transcendent and eternal God (Flame in the bush).
  • God reveals Himself as one who has an eternal plan (including Moses).

As Moses stands there, we discover two things about Moses:

  1. He is humble before God.  He says, “God, who am I, to represent You?”
  2. He is hungry for God.  God, who will I tell them that you are?

Oh, here is now the answer for the ages:  The true and living God is “The I AM.”  God had no other God to compare Himself too.  All other God’s were dead God’s.  God had no one (human) to compare Himself too.  He is I AM.

But there is more.  He is “The Lord.”  He is the powerful King, who reign’s and He is God alone.

Have you discovered this in your life?  Thomas (one of the twelve disciples) did after Jesus resurrection.  When He saw the resurrected Lord, Thomas said, “My Lord and my God.”

Oh, that many people where you live and I live would come to know the true answer for the question of the ages.  Oh, that the people of Malawi would come to know Him as Lord and Savior!!!  But how can they know unless you and I share with them the answer?  So, lets go and tell the world that Jesus is Lord!!!
