Taking off some weight (II Timothy 2)

11 The saying is trustworthy, for:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, II Timothy 2:11-13

Yes, it is true, many of us could use to take off some weight.  Sadly this truth comes to many of us after we have been broken down by unhealthy practices.  But this is not the weight Paul is writing about in our text today.

Paul knows Timothy is weighted down by the weight of his calling.  This calling has left him in both a fatigued and fearful place.  In the first 15 verses of chapter 2 Paul helps Timothy to take off some spiritual weight:

First, Paul challenges Timothy to embrace the power of Christ’s resurrection, Vs: 1.

As a believer we are not asked to do the work of the ministry in our strength but in His.  We have access to Christ’s power by faith, Ephesians 1:18-23.

Second, Paul challenges Timothy to pass on the glorious truth of the gospel, Vs: 2-3.

If Timothy remained weighed down, the gospel would not be passed on.  This is the Devils goal in weighing you down.  The Devil always opposes the gospel in you.  I challenge you to take time to simply give to the Lord the weights you are caring.  Take time to invest in His Word.  You may endure hardships but you will overcome.

Third, Paul comforts Timothy in reminding him of the sufficiency of God for his salvation, Vs: 11-13.

So often we thing, “my faith is totally up to me to accomplish.”

It is true that we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.  But that belief includes a total trust in Christ alone to save us.  He does it all.  Even when we get weighted down, He is still our Savior.

I want to challenge you to stop being weighted down by what you think you have to do.  Start resting in what He is doing!
