The agony of a broken heart (Mark 16)

11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. Mark 16:11

This days readings are glorious for all who understand the power of the resurrection.  I can honestly say, “following Jesus through the Gospel of Mark has been an amazing journey.” If you remember where our reading left off, you will understand the title of our blog today.

When we last read in Mark, these words filled our minds and hearts: “Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.” Mk. 15:47

Truly the hearts of each genuine follower of Jesus were broken.  Imagine the agony of that Friday, that we call “Good Friday.”  It was day one for Jesus in the grave.  Day two was on the Sabbath, as His followers began to deal with life without Jesus.  As the dawn breaks for day three, in the grave, three ladies make their way to the tomb of Jesus.

We see their love for the Savior on this Sunday morning. They came with spices they had bought.  They were coming to anoint the body of Jesus.  This was all they could do.

When they arrive, they receive the most glorious news.  Their Lord and Savior had been resurrected.  We rejoice with the Angel who said, “He is alive!!!”

We envy Mary Magdalene, who was the first to see the resurrected Lord.  We long to see Jesus like the two witnesses did.  One day we will see Jesus!!!

But wait just one moment.  Where are the disciples?  Answer, “They are dealing with the agony of a broken heart.”  It is so true, “A broken heart will rob you of the joy of resurrection power.”  Only when they saw Jesus did the agony leave.   These facts help us to understand how to overcome the agony of a broken heart:

  • We need daily encounters with Jesus.  (Every day you must meet with Jesus in your quiet place).
  • We need a daily reminder of Jesus assignment for our lives.  (We are called to go with the gospel to the nations).
  • We need daily power in Jesus  to overcome all the stones that are in our path.  (God will work miracles every day when we are walking with Him)>

Question:  “Are you having an agonizing day?” If so, tell it to Jesus.  Close the door from the world and spend a few minutes on your knees with Jesus.  Take time to be reminded of what your real purpose is in life.  Now, get up, believe He will do what He says He will do.

Oh my brothers and sisters, “Watch as God rolls away the stone!!!”

    One of my favorite verses:
    Acts 13:29-30
29And when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb… 30But God raised Him from the dead!

I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today……..You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart!

Thank you for your continued work with this blog.
