Looking Ahead (Zechariah 8-14)

12 For there shall be a sowing of peace. The vine shall give its fruit, and the ground shall give its produce, and the heavens shall give their dew. And I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. Zechariah 8:12

One of the most humbling discoveries about my life is this: “It is hard for me to look to the long-term future when I am dealing with daily pressures of the moment.”  I suspect I am not alone?

In Zechariah 8-14 the prophet of God directs the nation to look beyond the pressures of the moment to the future of what God had in store for His people.

When we consider the content of the prophet’s message we are encouraged to walk through pressure moments:

  • In chapter 8 we are reminded of the peace (Vs: 12) that comes as a result of the New Covenant made by Christ’s first coming, Jeremiah 31:33; Matt. 26:28; Rev. 21-22.
  • In chapter 9 we are told of Jesus first coming (Vs:9).  Jesus rides into Jerusalem as a conquering king, John 12:15.
  • In chapter 10 the Lord is coming to gather his people (Vs: 8).  Revelation 19
  • In chapter 11 the Good Shepherd will lay down His life for the sheep.  John 10:10-18
  • In chapter 12 the Lord will usher in the age of grace (Vs: 10-12). John 19:37
  • In chapter 13 the Lord will die in our place and establish His church (Vs: 3-9).  Mark 14:27
  • In chapter 14 the Lord will return with great authority.  Revelation 15-16

When we consider the intent of the prophet’s message we are encouraged to live in obedience to God’s Word despite the polluted landmines.

16 These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; 17 do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the Lord.” 8:16-17

Dear Lord, empower every believer to look ahead to what is to come.  Dear Lord, equip every believer to live in the now with a heart to do your will oh Lord!!!
