Anyone for bread and water? (Isaiah 28-30)

20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. Isaiah 30:20

One of the dreaded deeds of the affluent in America is the decision where to eat out.  It often ends in arguments.  But for much of the world, the ability to have anything to each is a welcomed circumstance.  For example, “to have bread and water” would be an awesome meal for my brothers and sisters in parts of Malawi Africa.

However, this is not the bread and water I am speaking about this morning.  Isaiah writes of bread and water in a metaphorically way.  Bread and water were a stable part of the diet of Israel in Isaiah’s day.  The prophet was predicting, “Adversity and Affliction” will become a stable part of your spiritual diet.

What would be the reason for this?

  • Because God is a wonderful God. 28:29

God in his excellent wisdom is disciplining Israel for her rebellion.  God’s desire is for His people to serve Him.

  • Because God is mighty and strong. 28:2

The people could not withstand his disciplining hand, 28:3-13.  God will use Assyria as His instrument of adversity and affliction.

  • Because God will not move His plumb line of justice. 28:16-17

God will not allow His standards to be compromised.  God will always sweep away lies and rebellion.

  • Because God is a merciful God in allowing His people the opportunity to repent. 30:15

If Israel would only return, she would have rest from her adversity and affliction.

Yes, it is God who sends affliction and adversity to His people, when they are in rebellion.  Today we would label this as the chastening hand of God, Hebrews 12:5-11.  Notice what Isaiah says will be the fruit of this meal:

20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. 30:20

26 Moreover, the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day when the Lord binds up the brokenness of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow. 30:26

In Israel’s case she was in this moment of adversity because of her rebellion.  If that is your case, repent and come home to Jesus.  But if your adversity is because of your righteous stand?  Keep eating the bread and drinking the water, blessed are you, I Peter 3:12-17!!!
