Still shocked (Revelation 9; John 5; Zechariah 5)

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk, 21 nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts,  Revelation 9:20-21

No matter how many times I read the above scripture, I am always in shock.

To set the context we need to be reminded that John is writing about the judgment that is to come as a result of the rebellion of man since the days of Adam.  Beginning in chapter 5  John reveals how Jesus Christ is going to win the war over humanity who is in all out rebellion.

Chapter 6 reveals the first wave of judgment in what is known as the seal judgments.

Chapters 8-9 reveal the second wave of judgments in what is known as the trumpet judgments.

Chapters 15-16 reveal the third and final wave of judgments known as the bowl judgments.

It is the second wave of judgments that are in focus in our reading today!!! Very transparently, I am shocked at what I read at the end of chapter 9.

Think it through:  “Here are a people (possible in our day) who have endured two waves of judgments.  Over half the worlds population has been destroyed as well as over half the world is economically and physically destroyed.

However, the people do not change their allegiance, their attitude, or their actions.  Have you ever wondered why?

  • They are convinced their way of life is the best way to live, Vs: 20a

In their view, this is of the enemy and it will get better.  They say; “I will just keep on in this way and it will work out.”  Truly they have been blinded by Satan, II Cor. 4:4

  • They are committed to the worship of their own personal gods, Vs: 20b

Even though they are dead gods, humanity still trusts in them.

  • They are clinging to their right to do whatever pleases them.

Notice what pleased them:

1.  Murder-the killing of the unborn, the taking of others lives who had what they wanted.  Many are murdering others in the name of religion.

2.  Sorceries-this word can mean to worship in the occult or it can mean to engage in the use of drugs.  Many in our world are consumed by both the occult and over the counter drug use.

3.  Sexual immorality-ours is a day of sex on demand with every perversion considered to be simply a choice that God understands.

4.  Thefts-people are robbing God of His right to sovereign worship.

In these shocking verses I am reminded of the truth:  “God is always just in his judgment.”  Consider Zechariah 5, from long ago, when the vision of the scroll reveals the judgment of God against all who do and continue to do evil.

On this day, I want to be moved to action in sharing the light of Jesus, John 8:12, in the shocking world of today!!!!  On this day I want to live in a way that reveals the truth of one Lord and one way!!!
