Before You Go (Ecclesiastes 12, Philemon 1)

“…Because man is going to his eternal home, and the mourner go about the street,” Ecclesiastes 12:5

One of the wonderful things I get to experience as a pastor is those moments when I am able to help people with things that they need.  For example, when visiting with a senior adult I will often say, “Before I go can I help you with anything?”  I truly mean this.  And I am truly blessed when they share with me something that they need.

This morning Solomon is writing the conclusion to his book.  Solomon is speaking passionately about the quickness and shortness of life.  He begins the chapter with the following words, “Remember also your creator in the days of your youth before the evil days come and the years draw near.”

Think it through:

1.  Life without God is like living in a house that is falling down, Vs: 1-8

Solomon has encountered many people who are at the end of life and their lives look like a house that is falling down.  He writes and says, “Before you go this way, follow Jesus.”

Question, “Does your life and my life resemble a house that is being built or a house that is falling down?”

2.  Life with God is a life filled with delight, Vs: 9-14

Solomon writes, “The end of the matter; all has been heard.  Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”

As we live for Christ we are assured of success!!!  This is what is means to build a spiritual house!

Our takeaway:

Jesus gave the same metaphor in Matthew 7:24-27.  He is the foundation on which we should live our lives.  When Christ is the foundation we will have no regrets as we leave this life.

Take time today and ask yourself if there are things you need to do if this were the day you would go to meet God.

Solomon closes his book in the following way, “For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”
