Not Afraid of Bad News (Deuteronomy 23; Psalm 112-113)

“When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every evil thing.”  Deuteronomy 23:9

“He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord,” Psalm 112:7

Truly I could feel the pain in the heartfelt words of the mother whose teenager was walking in a rebellious path.  As she talked about what she was facing, I found myself wanting to help her in some way.  Her pain had turned to great fear.  She said to me, “Every time the phone rings I shake on the inside because I am afraid that it will be bad news about my son.”

Brothers and sisters, in Christ, everyone can identify with those moments of bad news.  In Psalm 112 we find great reason to rejoice in the God who gives us a reason to have faith even in the presence of bad news.

This chapter begins with glorious praise to our God.  Those who praise Him most are those according to verse one who both fear and delight in God.  When God occupies the throne in a person’s life he or she can face every moment with confident assurance of victory on the other side of any moment.

The writer of Psalm 112 mentions two areas where we can have assurance:

1.  Assurance in our financial situation, Vs: 3-7

2.  Assurance in our battles, Vs: 8-10

You and I can be assured of victory over bad news if we are both dedicated and delighting in the Lord.  Here is God’s take away for us:  “Whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread or disaster,”  Prov. 1:33

This is the good news that mother needed to hear.  And by the way, she did.  Today she has a son who is serving the Lord.  May you and I do the same!!!
