Trials and temptations (Exodus 1; Luke 4)

“Now there arose a new King in Egypt who did not know Joseph,”  Exodus 1:8

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days, being tempted by the Devil.”  Luke 4:1-2A

Yes, “Everyone has trials and temptations,”  including you and I.  Today’s more for Christ readings both include great trials and temptations:

Consider Israel in Exodus 1

The nation is formed in Vs: 1-7.  God has preformed what he predicted (A great nation).  The nation is feared, Vs: 8-22.  The king did not favor God nor his people.  He feared that God’s people who rise up so he begins a process to destroy all male babies.  However the real King provided a way of escape.  In the midst of trials and temptation, God always makes a way of escape.

Consider Jesus, Lk 4:1-13

Jesus is tempted by Satan and Jesus overcome Satan.  As we read these verses we notice two things:

1.  Everyday temptations:  Jesus was tempted by physical desires (Would he make his own food from a rock).   Jesus was faced with positional desires (Would he chose to become the leader of this world).  Jesus was faced with prideful desires (The world could see his power).  Jesus overcame Satan, and by doing so he was able to give us a pattern of victory in our trials and temptations.

Question:  How was Jesus able and how was Israel able to overcome?  They were both committed to the power of the Word of God.  Both believed in the power and promises of the word.  The one difference was in that Jesus was the Living Word.

This day, the Lord desires for you to bring your trials and temptations before him, Hebrews 2:18, 4:16-18.  This day the Lord desires for you and I to walk as He walked.  In your trials allow God to be God!!!
